In an epidemic, better knowledge can lead to wiser policy and can save lives. Can wastewater-based measurements of SARS-CoV-2 activity help us understand the effects of Covid-19 vaccination, and how those effects might change with new variants like Delta?

Nationwide wastewater monitoring program helped HHS and CDC track new phase of the COVID-19 pandemic

Today marks the final day of Phase 2 of the HHS/CDC National Wastewater Monitoring Program. Over the last 12 weeks, we have processed more than 4,800 wastewater samples from 318 wastewater treatment facilities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 2 US Territories, and 7 Tribal Territories, as shown in the figure below. These facilities collectively represent over 90 million people, or 27% of the US population.

In contrast, an equitable monitoring system based on clinical testing requires not only placing testing sites in the right places, but also that a representative population seeks testing. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the feces of COVID-19 patients and in wastewater has drawn attention to the use of wastewater surveillance as an epidemiological tool. Communities are looking at SARS-CoV-2 viral titers to understand trends over time, and further inform reopening plans for states and school systems. However, we believe that there’s much more that can be learned from wastewater data.
